Those Black Streaks on Your Roof Aren't Dirt

The dark streaks running down asphalt roofs across the River Valley are a living organism feeding on your shingles. Here's what they are and why pressure washing makes it worse.

It's alive

Drive any street in Russellville or Clarksville and you'll see it: dark vertical streaks running down asphalt shingle roofs, always heaviest on the shaded side. Most homeowners assume it's dirt, soot, or shingles wearing out. It's none of those. It's Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacteria that lives on the roof surface.

Why it's on your roof specifically

Modern asphalt shingles use limestone as a filler material. Gloeocapsa magma feeds on it. Add the humidity coming off the Arkansas River and the shade from mature hardwoods, and River Valley roofs offer close to ideal conditions. It always starts on north-facing slopes and under tree cover, because those stay damp longest.

It's not only cosmetic

The colony holds moisture directly against the shingle surface, and the dark color raises the roof temperature. Combined, that speeds up granule loss and shortens the usable life of the roof. Left alone for years, an appearance problem becomes a replacement problem.

Never pressure wash it

This is the part that costs people money. High-pressure water blasts the protective granules off asphalt shingles. Those granules are the shingle's UV protection — once they're gone, the mat underneath degrades quickly. Most shingle manufacturers explicitly void warranty coverage on pressure-washed roofs.

What actually works

A non-pressure application of a cleaning solution that kills the organism, followed by a gentle rinse. Because the growth is killed rather than mechanically scraped off, it stays gone longer. Nothing on the roof is disturbed — no lifted shingles, no granule loss, no warranty problem.

How to know it's time

If you can see streaking from the street, it's well established. If it's visible from the driveway on a specific slope only, that slope is your damp, shaded side and the rest will follow. Either way, it's easier and cheaper to address it before it spreads across the whole roof.
